Jo’s Story

My name is Jo and a number of years ago I was facing a dire diagnosis of stage 3 breast cancer.

After every intense round of double dose chemotherapy, I needed a critical injection within 24 hours—something my husband and I were simply not equipped to manage on our own. I’m needle phobic, and my husband, who has a vision impairment, was not comfortable giving the injection either.

We were anxious and unsure of what to do next. My primary medical team suggested home health care as an option. Then came a knock at the door. That’s when VNA & Hospice of the Southwest Region (VNAHSR) came into our lives.

A kind nurse—empathetic, professional and full of good humor—arrived at our door like a godsend. She came every other week for two months, helping me stay on schedule with treatment and lifting a tremendous burden from our shoulders. Her presence was more than medical care – it was peace of mind.

We were relieved, we were grateful and most importantly—we were not alone. The care we received empowered us to find our way through a very difficult medical crisis. And it’s why I’m writing to you today—to ask you to join me in supporting this essential organization.

Today, my husband and I are older, and who knows what challenges lie ahead. But we sleep easier knowing VNAHSR is still here, for us and for our neighbors.

As a matter of fact, I had to call them just a few weeks ago with that familiar mix of worry and hope. My husband recently underwent major surgery for cancer treatment. We were facing questions about long-term care and recovery. The intake team at VNAHSR was kind, compassionate and responsive – as I knew they would be.

I know times are uncertain and that giving may feel harder. But I also know the importance of having someone to turn to in a crisis—and what it means to know that care is close to home, when you need it most. Especially in a rural state, such as Vermont.

VNAHSR is there in the moments that matter most. Whether it’s helping a cancer patient avoid a risky trip to the hospital, providing long-term care, or giving a family peace of mind in their most vulnerable hours, their work touches lives in the most human way possible.

Please join me in giving to this devoted agency of staff who deliver care with uncommon dedication. Your donation ensures that compassionate, professional home care and hospice remains available to everyone who needs it—because one day, that someone could be you or someone you love.
